Demecarium [dem-e-KARE-ee-um] is another cholinesterase inhibitor used to treat chronic open-angle glaucoma (primarily in patients refractory to other agents) closed-angle glaucoma after irredectomy. It is also used for the diagnosis and treatment of accommodative esotropia. Demecarium is a quaternary amine that is structurally related to neostigmine. Mechanisms of actions and side effects are similar to those of neostigmine.
Demecarium is a parasympathomimetic that acts as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It is one of several topical (applied directly to the affected area) medications used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) associated with primary glaucoma in cats, dogs, and other animals.
